Batman, Ben Affleck, And Skydiving
Yes, yes, the furor has died down every so slightly but their is still a battle raging in the hearts of nerds everywhere over the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman. Might have something to do with that whole Daredevil thing, but that was ten years ago. Ten years.
Affleck has done a lot since then and some of it has been quite good. Anyone remember Argo? Yeah, the movie won an Oscar people. An Oscar. Clearly, love or hate Affleck, the man can act. But can he play Batman?
There have been so many varieties of Batman over the years. There was the campy Adam West version from the 60's television show that's somehow a classic despite being cheesy. Then there was Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and finally the gravelly-voiced Christian Bale. Look at that list for a second.
We've got a guy who played a stay-at-home Mom overwhelmed by housework and kids. Another guy known best known for being a hotshot young pilot. Man, he was so cool. Then we've got someone who played a doctor on television and another guy who once played Jesus in a television movie. What do they have in common? Not a heck of a lot.
But they all played Batman. You probably have a favorite, everyone does, but that doesn't make the ones you didn't like a disaster. The man behind the cowl has been a lot of different men, so there's every chance that Affleck will do a good job.
My husband went skydiving the other weekend and while we were waiting for him to float to the ground there was a regular skydiver there who had the Bat Signal on his suit. I commented that I thought it was cool and he showed me the parachute he was about to tuck away. It was a giant Bat Signal.
I asked him what he thought about Ben Affleck as Batman and his answer ought to give us all pause, no matter what the character. He said, "Just as long as we get a Batman, I'm happy." Kinda makes you think for a second. Love or hate Affleck, at least we still get a Batman!
