The D6 Generation Podcast #92 Kristin Rielly of Geek Girls Network

This time out I'm joined by Kristin Rielly, my co-host/partner in crime on the Geek Girls Network podcast. We talk about the yawn-fest that is Skyrim and the odd fascination the guys have for wandering aimlessly through its forests and towns. Oh, and there be dragons, but there just aren't enough. Download the episode and head to the 2hr 0min mark to hear my chat with Kristin.

My Geek Christmas

Image: Nicole Wakelin
I think geeks are particularly fond of the holidays because it gives us a chance to act a bit silly and child-like without the usual number of odd looks. At Halloween you can break out the cosplay and no one will call the cops. On Independence Day you can set off all manner of fireworks (aka stuff that blows up!) and again, no one will call the cops. And at Christmas you can decorate with all your favorite geek-themed treasures, from Star Trek to Star Wars, Doctor Who to Doctor Seuss, and people will ask you about them rather than frown at your eccentricities. This year, we began decorating over the weekend and my home, and car are nearly completely Christmasified in their own geeky ways.

Skyrim, You Bore Me

I am not a good console gamer. Sure, I play board games and card games and I have a wonderful time, but, put a controller in my hands and it's all over. I've tried, really, because there's nothing worse than being a geek who's an inept gamer. I hear about the latest and greatest game that sounds amazing and is set in a universe I love, but when it comes out I know there's no chance I'll be able to enjoy it because I'll be too busy getting fragged. That's why I'm a Backseat Gamer.

Once Upon a Time vs Grimm

There are few things true geeks like more than a genuine debate about who or what is the best of something. Who's the best Star Trek captain? (Kirk) Who's the best Doctor? (David Tennant) So it's really no surprise that when Once Upon a Time and Grimm, two very similar shows, debuted this fall people immediately started to argue over which was better and which would manage to escape cancellation.

Sci-Fi, Where Are You?

Mal and Kaylee at NYCC, Image: Nicole Wakelin
Several years ago we ditched cable because it seemed we were getting more reality shows than anything else and paying a ridiculous amount for the privilege. Instead we stream the shows we want to see and even paying by the episode for a few still puts us ahead of our old cable bill. Usually, we have more than enough to keep us busy, but this year, sadly, we have not found an "it" show. Worse, we don't have a sci-fi show in our queue at all. What happened to sci-fi television?

Snowtober Stole My Tech

Gadgets, Gadgets, Gadgets!  Image: Nicole Wakelin
I am typing this post from my 52 degree living room. My laptop has a four hour charge and the fireplace is roaring so it’s just warm enough to type without my fingers falling off. Turn on the heat, you say? I wish! I am suffering the fallout of Snowtober, a cute name for a major nuisance. It’s what happens when a foot of heavy, wet snow falls early in the season before the leaves have dropped from the trees. It piles on those pretty leaves until limbs and even whole trees snap, taking power lines with them as they crash to the ground.
