The D6 Generation Podcast #88

This episode includes Raef's interview at GenCon with the guys behind the Mouseguard RPG which inspired me to break out the game and see how it would go over with the kids.  It's off to a great start, but a suggestion by my eldest has me a little worried about the direction this could take, possibly resulting in a very short life for all of our characters.  Download the show and head to the 2hr 2 min mark to hear the Total Fan Girl segement of the show.

Give Geeks a Chance

Not every person that calls themselves a Nerd or a Geek has been an outcast. We weren't all the last one picked for the team in gym or the only one without a date to the big dance. We didn't all wear thick black glasses held together with tape, or play video games, or read comics, or play DnD. But, for most of us, there has been a moment when we didn't quite fit in with everyone else.

Pirates vs. Ninjas

Argh, Matey! Hoist the main, swab the deck, shiver me timbers and...okay that's all I've got for Talk Like a Pirate Day. I will return to plain old English until my kids get home and I break out my best Captain Jack Sparrow impersonation, minus the rum. Oh, and I've also changed my Facebook language to English (pirate) which you should all do right now because it really will make you giggle on a Monday. As I watched all my friends post piratey updates I started thinking about one of the biggest rivalries of all time. Not Star Wars vs Star Trek. Not even Kirk vs Picard. I'm talking about Pirates vs Ninjas.

NASA, Shuttles and Space for the Future

Space Shuttle Columbia STS-1
One of my favorite memories of this summer is the day I sat with my daughter snuggled in my lap and watched the final space shuttle launch. As Atlantis took to the skies, I wiped away tears and tried to explain to her why Mommy was crying over a spaceship. This is a little girl who has a room plastered with glow-in-the-dark stars and maps of the solar system and who picked a telescope as a birthday present one year because she wanted to see the planets. We talked about how cool it was, how amazing, that there were astronauts in that ship at exactly the moment we were watching it careen into space. She was fascinated at the idea that it was "for real" and, just like me, sad that it wouldn't be happening again.

Superman and the Costume of Doom!

I am a bit behind the curve and only recently finished watching the Showtime series The Tudors. It's taken most of the summer, but I finally saw the last episode where crotchety old Henry VIII bids us adieu. Despite the series title, my favorite character wasn't Henry, but his best friend, the Duke of Suffolk, played by Henry Cavill. I realized about halfway through that he was the actor who would also be playing Superman in the next movie and from that moment on, no matter how hard I tried, I kept seeing him in that famous cape and tights, complete with that silly little curlicue of hair that Christopher Reeve did best.

In Defense of JCPenney: Too Pretty to do Homework

I know I am supposed to be outraged with JCPenney for "The Shirt" which they pulled from their online store yesterday. I have two little girls. I see the kind of stuff that their friends wear and often shake my head and wonder what their moms were thinking when they agreed to let their daughters dress like dime-a-dance girls. I understand the frustration at seeing girls pushed down a stereotypical path from the time they wear that first pink onesie. I get it, really I do, but I also don't think a tee shirt with a funny saying is going to send my girls on a downward spiral ending with them dropping out of school in favor of beauty queen dreams.

The D6 Generation Podcast #86 Magic and Dating

This week the internet was abuzz over a Gizmodo post in which a woman decided her date was awful simply because the guy played Magic.  She called him out in the nastiest way possible and this wasn't just any old gamer, this was a World Champion Magic player.  The guy has skills.  What do I think of the drama?  Download the episode and head to the 2hr 9min mark to hear the Total Fan Girl segment of the show.
