Geeks Are Actually Just Big Kids

We just returned from a long weekend in the White Mountains of NH.  It's a beautiful region with plenty of activities for everyone.  It also has a ridiculous number of tacky gift shops.  The second you leave the actual state park, wham, they're everywhere.  These shops are filled with the kind of stuff that locals don't generally purchase.  In this case, it's overpriced bottles of maple syrup, shirts that say "New Hampshire" with colorful leaves falling from a nonexistent sky, or quite possibly an embroidered moose standing in a bog.  I live in this state and the only time I've ever worn anything with a moose on it was when I forgot to bring a sweatshirt with me and it was wear the moose or freeze.  Hey, it gets cold in them there mountains!

On Sunday morning we took the kids to our favorite little diner.  It's got trains that run on a track around the ceiling, pictures for the kids to color, and endless cups of coffee for us Grups.  Of course, there is a gift shop attached to this cute and tasty diner and we always wander through on the way out.  I really don't know why I do this because I have never bought anything.  Well, okay, one time I did buy some bug bite stuff that didn't work but that shouldn't even count.  See, why do I bother?  But this time, I had a really good reason.

While in the dining area I had noticed random gift shops items tacked to the walls to entice me to buy something.  It was mostly an assortment of the above cheesy tee shirts along with a few helpless stuffed moose and I think possibly a duck.  But what caught my eye was a Star Wars tee shirt.  It was made to look like the original Star Wars poster from way back in the 70's, only the people were forest animals and it said "May the Forest Be With You".  I had to have this shirt, and so did my kids, and my husband!  We'd be like those families that wear all the same hideous neon green shirt at an amusement park so they don't lose each other, only way, way Geekier.  I searched until I found the stack of shirts and then, horror!  Nothing but kids sizes?

I confirmed with the clerk behind the genuine-fake-log counter that they didn't carry adult sizes.  Sadly, I left my dream of the perfect set of Geek Family shirts behind at that little diner.  I got home and searched online and I still couldn't find this shirt.  It's hopeless.  Even Obi-Wan couldn't help me on this one.  Despite all the cool geek stuff out there, companies still think some stuff is just for kids.  When will they realize that your average Geek Adult is just a kid with a little more money in his pocket?  Until that day I shall continue my quest for the ultimate matching Geek Family tees.
