Sitting waiting for your kids to finish with lessons is pretty dull. I have spent hours in the locker room funk of the gymnastics waiting room, sitting on the bleachers at the sauna-like indoor pool and swatting flys in the dust of horseback riding. Sometimes, I bring a book. Sometimes, I play on my phone. And sometimes, I chat with other Moms. It's Mom stuff, though, not terribly exciting for the most part. Then, much to my amazement and through the miracle of Facebook, I discover that one of the Moms I have been chatting with is a fellow Fan Girl!
You see, my daughter has been taking swim lessons at our local YMCA. (Is the song in your head? You're welcome. Hate me later.) Classes change every few weeks and sometimes you make temporary friends that you don't see again. Well, one of these friends has now rejoined me as we've registered our kids for the same lesson. In the course of our chat, Facebook comes up, and later that day I have a new friend.
Next week comes and at swim class, she makes the big reveal. She checked out my Facebook profile and saw all the geeky stuff I like, and she likes it, too! Battlestar Galactica? She nearly cried when it was over. Stargate? Loved it, but can't watch Sanctuary now because it freaks her out to see Amanda Tapping with long, black hair and a British accent. (I watch it, but have the same issue.) She loves Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. How can you go wrong with that? Now, I just need to find about a half-dozen more Moms like this one and I'll be having as much fun waiting as my kids are playing!
