I love conventions. I really do. But here's the problem. The really good ones are never anywhere even remotely close to where I live. Trade conventions, sure. They're here. I have even been forced to attend a few in a dreary, work-related capacity over the years. Let me tell you right now, The Annual Convention of the Maine Municipal Association, miss that one. The good ones, the geeky fan ones, are out West in California, or Seattle or down in Georgia, but never in the Northeast. I know it can get cold and snowy, but we do have a summer. Okay, it lasts for about 4 weeks, but really, Boston has more convention space than it knows what to do with most days. Still, nothing. Small, local cons are great, but I want a BIG convention. Something that will have it's own little #bigcon tag on twitter.
Last weekend was PAX 2009 in Seattle. That's in Washington state for those geographically challenged. Can it get any further away? Apparently, Alaska was booked. Anyway, I was not able to attend this wonder of geekfests, but I did get lots of nifty twitter updates from the likes of Major Nelson and Wil Wheaton. I also wandered on over to Penny Arcade to see what the hosts of the big shindig were saying. And what they were saying was this...PAX East Coast: 2010. In Boston. That's right! East Coast Bay-Beeee!
I got a little excited. I bought two tickets, printed them out, hugged them, printed them again in case the wrinkles caused by the hugging created some sort of scanning malfunction thus denying me admission to this event. They are now safely stored in a manilla folder in my filing cabinet until the magic dates arrive. March 26th-28th 2010.......are we there yet?
