Cons. Cons. Cons. In particular, Carnage Con, which is a gaming convention in Fairlee, VT. I am pretty sure I will be there with my husband this year and I am really looking forward to the weekend. It's a ways off, November 6th-8th to be exact, so I still have two whole months to wait. But I am very excited because I just love going to Cons. And this is why.
On an average day, if you show up anywhere dressed like a Stormtrooper, or Mal, or your WoW Avatar, then you are going to get some really odd looks. You will. Trust me on this. However, show up at your average Con and you are going to get nothing but admiration for all the hard work that went into your costume. People may say things like "That's fantastic! Are you in the 501st?" or "Nathan Fillion's got nothing on you..can I get a picture?" or "Hey,I think you're in my Guild!". And that is just plain, cool.
You see, kids get Halloween. They dress up in something cute, or scary, or as their idol-of-the-moment....I personally am praying for fewer Hannah Montanas at my door this year...and they go door-to-door showing off their costume. And don't forget the candy. Who among us has not given extra candy to the little princess decked out from head to toe in glittery mesh? Or the kid dressed like a Hershey bar that can hardly scale the stairs in his costume?
Well, us Grups, we have Cons. We dress up as our idol-of-the-moment, show up at a huge hall, play games, spend too much money on souvenirs and instead of candy, maybe garner a few compliments. Those compliments are that extra handful of candy for a job well done. (And don't tell anyone, but that booth in the corner behind the giant cardboard dragon, they've got Hershey's Kisses for the taking.)
